Research Assistant

Posted: November 24, 2020

The Neugebauer Lab in the Department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated post-graduate student with background in cellular and molecular biology to join our team as a research assistant. Our lab has established experimental systems in budding yeast, zebrafish embryos, and mammalian tissue culture cells to explore RNA biogenesis and function in a variety of biological contexts and with a diversity of tools, from imaging to genome-wide approaches. Our observations have provided novel insights into transcription and splicing mechanisms as well as principles of cellular organization that facilitate efficient gene expression. We are currently searching for a post-graduate student to join our team in studying how the cell nucleus is compartmentalized and how nuclear bodies help cells respond to stress.

Job Description:

The research assistant will have the opportunity to learn common molecular biology techniques including tissue culture, DNA cloning, RNA extraction, real time PCR, sequencing, and microscopy. Some laboratory experience with these techniques is helpful but not required.  The research assistant will collaborate with other lab members and work closely with the PI. During their time in the lab, they will be expected to attend weekly lab meetings and departmental seminars and will have the opportunity to present their research at both. Additionally, the research assistant will be eligible for authorship on resulting publications related to the project. The appointment is for a minimum of 1 year with full-time effort (40 hours per week) with the possibility to extend for an additional year. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in applying to PhD or MD/PhD programs in the future.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • BS or BA in a related field (e.g. cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology)

  • Good written as well as verbal communication skills

  • Relevant coursework: at least one formal laboratory class in biology or chemistry

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working with tissue culture and/or any microscopy experience

  • Prior experience working in a lab (summer research programs, relevant lab courses, volunteering)

The recommender may send the letter directly. Please copy Dr. Neugebauer’s assistant, Ms. Sarah Auddino, at sarah.auddino@yale.edu. We will hire for this position(s) on a rolling basis over the next couple of months and will close the ad once positions have been filled.
